Trips

Fiona, Matthias and Papa

You can imagine, just to sit around became boring for Robert. Of course, he was happy to spend his whole day with his kids. He loved to play with them, to see them enjoying their holidays, to do short excursions to the next playground. And as soon as one of the little ones became tired Robert was on his way with a buggy.

But, just to experience the camping ground wasn't enough for him. He wanted to see some of the near neighborhood. He could convince Alexandra to do some short trips to near Grado, Trieste, Aquilea and Udine.

Trieste

Villa Miramar Maximilian from Austria Trieste by rain

Trieste is close to Grado. The former southern Austrian harbor has flourished since the end of communism in Yugoslavia. We liked the city very much and discovered it on foot. Unfortunately the weather wasn't on our side and rain expelled us at the end.

On our way to Triest we passed "Castello di Miramare" and the "Grotta Gigante".

The palace Castello di Miramare and its beautiful garden were built by the archduke Maximilian. He was the brother of Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I. and was for a short time the emperor of Mexico. What can you say? These people knew the good spots in the world. The view to the blue Adriatic Sea is just gorgeous.

The Grotta Gigante is Italian's biggest stalactite cave and Fiona was not afraid to walk all 500 steps downstairs. We had to carry her only on our way back up. Matthias didn't care. He just slept in our arms.

Aquilea

I am ready Forum in Aquilea Let's go! Basilica of Aquilea

Before you reach Grado you have to pass the Italian city Aquilea. It is a very historic place with a world famous basilica. Aquilea used to be the third biggest city in the Roman Empire and used to have about 100.000 habitants. You can still visit the former Forum, the nearby harbor, and fundaments of houses.

The Basilica is a world heritage site and impresses the visitors with a marvelous mosaic on the floor. Although it was raining most of the time it was fun to pass all the antique remains on a short tour. The old stones fired our imagination.

Udine

Rainy days Udine

We were convinced the rain would stop as soon as we would leave Aquilea. We continued our trip to Udine. Well, the rain didn't stop but we were happy to go to this beautiful city. We didn't take too many pictures of Udine because we wanted to protect our camera. However, the city offered lots of fun despite of the bad weather. If you are close to it pass by. It is a beautiful Italian city.
