Camping? Alexandra was confused, when Robert told her he would like to go camping with his young family.
Alexandra had no idea what to expect. She stayed always at hotels on her numerous vacation trips. What could she look forward to? Sleeping in a small tent, no abilities to offer sterile dishes for Matthias and even more: Sharing toilettes and bathrooms with strangers somewhere on the camping ground?
However, Robert has had lots of experience with camping. When he was young he traveled with his parents in a caravan. He did his first independent vacation trips with his first car (an orange VW beetle) and a little tent to Italy and France. And don't forget his three-month trip through North America with a Volkswagen Camper! As a matter of fact, there is even the myth, that Robert was fathered in a little Caravan in Spain.
Robert has always liked the independent and casual vacations camping could offer. But how could he convince anxious Alexandra about the benefits of camping? There did still exist the old caravan which Robert's parents had bought in 1980(!). It had been stored and forgotten at a small hut for almost seven years. He suggested reactivating the old caravan and giving it a try. If Alexandra or the rest of the family didn't like the trip they would return immediately and would sell the caravan.
Alexandra agreed with some hesitation to Robert's suggestion and supported the caravan's renovation. What was to do? What could we expect? First, we had to renew the caravan's breaks, tires and light system. Second, our Volvo had to be equipped with a trailer hitch. Third, we had to check the rest of the equipment.
The caravan has a length of 5 meters and a width of 2 meters. It offers two huge beds, a small kitchen with refrigerator and a washbasin. Furthermore, you can attach a tent to the caravan to expand the available space by almost 16 square meters. It can be arranged as a little terrace which offers a comfortable place to eat, read and watch the neighbors. In addition it contains a kitchenette where we cooked delicious food for us.
